We didn’t talk much on that first leg. Carol seemed to be preoccupied with her own thoughts, and me—I was trying to figure how a luscious, luxury-lapped dame like this one could get tangled with a one-time mobster like Duke Cerise. From a photographer’s point of view Carol was all dame—she stacked up structurally to the fan’s idea of a perfect woman. She was tall—slim—her blue eyes set off by those intriguing dark eyebrows flying away at the corners to give her a faintly surprised look, like she was amused at the world and men in particular.

I’m not a photographer.

Maybe what I needed to be was a psychiatrist. One of those guys who get a dame to loll on a couch and give with her dreams. It always struck me as soft touch—this analyzing of dames with worries on their mind. But maybe I had it wrong way round. I was the guy who was worrying, and Carol—that crazy mixed-up millionaire’s daughter—was the one who seemed like she didn’t have a care in the world. We talked.

We covered the weather, we covered the airline service. We even shared a baby-bottle of Scotch together. She told me a little about her old man but not much. She skated around any serious topic and when I got onto the subject of Rock Alison she wasn’t all that communicative.

In other words, she didn’t give any more than a fast pick-up at a polo-game.

So we changed planes and flew on, after a meal which I ate alone in the airport restaurant. Carol vanished and didn’t show up again until take-off time. I didn’t comment on her sudden disappearance and she didn’t volunteer any information.

A dame with more reserve than the Chase National Bank.

All flights come to an end sometime, and we touched down at Havana early in the morning. So early the nightclub moochers hadn’t yet thought about setting a course for home. Carol had spent the last three hours reclining back in her sleeperette seat, her rug draped casually over her magnificent legs. In that time I used up a lot of gray matter trying to figure the pieces together. J. B. Weiler was big-time. He had a representative in Havana, Rock Alison and that guy and Carol, the boss’s daughter were that way about each other. So this Rock Alison gets himself lost, and Weiler does plenty of worrying. It was at this point in my reasoning I figured Weiler was straight in his dealings with Havana. At the same time he was plenty concerned about not getting mixed up in any dope scandal. On account of a bad mistake he once made.

Now it shows on the screen that his ever-loving daughter is so thick with onetime gangster, Duke Cerise, that he’s even at the airport when she takes off.

And then I get the shakedown treatment.

Coincidence?

I would be willing to bet dollars to pesos that Duke Cerise masterminded the attempted snatch when the boys put the freeze on me at the airport. Gondola was a stooge, and I was betting that he was on Duke Cerise’s payroll.
